Hello everyone,
How is everything going? I am doing
great here in CHILE. Sure things aren't always perfect, but it really
is great being here. I still can't believe that Mitchell is going to be
soo close!
Yesterday was pretty amazing. We had a meeting with
Elder Francisco Viñas of the Area Presidency in the mission home with
about 30 other of the missionary leaders here. It was a really great
meeting. We were able to learn a lot from him, and he was able to help
teach us more about the Gospel and how to be better missionaries here.
I really liked the opportunity to be able to learn from someone from
the First Quorum of Seventy. He is a great man who was really able to
teach us a lot. He said something really interesting about missionaries
that I think must apply to people everywhere. He said that when a
missionary gets overly discouraged or when a missionary stops being
obedient, it is because they do not understand the atonement of Jesus
Christ. It a really interesting idea. If you want something really
good to ponder, think about why that would be. And then try to figure
out if there is an even deeper reason. I think you will learn a lot.
Otherwise things are good here. There have been
some cold days, but in general it has not been too bad. I can't believe
that it is already the middle of August. That is just crazy to me. It
is also weird to think that Kari is already about to start her senior
year of high school.
Well something that is really neat about the ward
that I am in is that there are tons of youth. But I mean TONS. Imagine
this, we have a ward with an average attendance of about 60 people in
Sacrament meeting. However, at the mutual activity on Friday night,
there were 19 youth that showed up. And seminary could have an
enrollment of over 20 people. That to me is impressive.
Anyway, on that note, we are actually teaching some
youth. There are two 17-year-old young women we are teaching who come
from less active families. We are working really hard with them to help
them to be able to learn and to prepare to be baptized. They both came
to church yesterday along with the 9-year-old sister of one of them.
It was really great. Hopefully they will be able to keep preparing so
that they will be ready to be baptized in not too long.
Alright now for the last part:
HOW TO SURVIVE IN CHILE
Let's start with some more vocabulary-
¿cachái? - do you get it?
cabro (chico)- (little) kid
but the best one of all, which I am going to miss saying once I get home...
"yaaaa po" said in a very whiny tone extending the "a" and rising in
tone means "come on" in the sense of "cut it out" or "lets go already"
Now for food.
Learn to like tomatoes and
raw onions. That's what they call a salad here. Yeah it took me a bit
of getting used to, but it's all that you usually get if its not a salad
of lettuce and lemon juice.
Alright well I'm going to get going, but I'll talk to you a bit later.
Elder Stollenwerk
