Things
are going well here. We have had some pretty warm weather recently,
and I think that we are starting to enter into spring. I enjoy this
weather, but it also means that in not too long it will start being
almost unbearably hot. It seems like the weather frequently changes
like that. There is a winter followed by summer followed by winter with
very little time between those seasons. The nights are still cold
here, but I went out the other day with just a short sleeve shirt.
Things are going well here as far as teaching is
going. We are teaching a young woman who will be baptized this next
week. She is 17 years old and is really great. Her mom was active in
her youth but has been inactive ever since she was about 21. She is
already starting to go to seminary in the nights (it is at 7pm here 4
days a week). I am still constantly impressed by the young men and
young women of our ward. Sure they're not perfect, but they are pretty
impressive in what they do at their age.
As far as interesting news goes, we had a meeting in
Rancagua on Friday where we talked with the mission president and some
other leaders in the mission. It was a really good meeting. One of the
things that was really exciting was we received news that on October
19th, Elder Bednar will be coming to Chile to talk with all of the
missionaries in our mission and one other mission (I believe it is
Santiago West). I am really excited for the opportunity to be able to
listen to him speak to all of us.
Alright well on to the special part...
HOW TO SURVIVE IN CHILE
Alright
today we will talk about transportation. There are 3 basic modes of
public transportation here in most parts of Chile. If you are farther
away from the city in little towns it may be different, but I think this
is pretty general for Chilean cities from what I can tell.
LA MICRO - This is the bus. They have set bus stops where they
will stop. They are generally the most regular and will take you on
their set course. However, they are a bit slower.
EL
COLECTIVO - These are special taxis. They have set routes. Sometimes
they have a bit of flexibility where they go, but for the most part they
are like buses except in the fact that they will usually pick you up
and drop you off whenever you want. You pay per person.
EL TAXI - Well I think you probably know what this is... a taxi!
Yeah they will take you wherever you want to go. Generally they are a
bit more pricey but if you go with a lot of people, you can split the
price and it is not too bad.
One more random thing about food... Milk here is a
bit disappointing. It all tastes a bit funny. Probably due to the fact
that it is all irradiated so that you don't have to refrigerate it
before opening. On the bottom of every carton is a list of numbers from
1-5 with one missing. The one that is missing is the number of times
that it has been treated. For example, 1 2 4 5 means that it was
irradiated 3 times. Go for lower numbers... I just feel like
irradiating milk 5 times can not be good for you.
Alright well that is all for today. Good luck with everything, and I will talk to you later.
Chao,
Elder Stollenwerk
