Things are going pretty
well here in Chile. Today I officially made the change to my new sector
which is called Las Acacias. It is really close to my old sector, but
it is a bit worse as far as conditions here go. There are more drugs
and violence here, but you just have to keep working with what you have.
I am excited by the fact that this is historically a pretty good
sector. There have generally been a lot of investigators and strong
members that really do a lot to help out. I am now with my new
companion, Elder Olivares. He is from Maryland, but his parents are
from El Salvador. He seems like a really great guy, and I am excited to
be working with him.
It is still really weird to think that I am in a new
ward. I am still so close to my old sector that I can just cross the
street and be there. Today I already saw a family of members and and
investigator that we have been teaching. I imagine that I will continue
to see people here as my time progresses. It will be interesting to
see how long they leave me here. My guess is it will only be 1 or 2
changes, so either 6 or 12 weeks, but we will have to see what the
president decides to do. We have a lot of work to do here, being as we
do not have very many investigators that we are teaching right now, but I
feel like we will be able to have a lot of work to do here. I am
excited to help this work out more in the coming weeks.
But anyway, as for the reason for the change, it
sounds like the Stake President wanted the Zone Leaders of the stake to
be close to him so that we can meet together more frequently and be able
to have better communication between him and the missionary work here
in this stake. This stake definitely needs a lot of help. We only have
5 wards here in the stake and I don't think any of them qualify as real
wards, being that they only have an average attendance of 50 or 60 with
the large majority being women and kids. So there is a general lack of
priesthood here in the stake. There is one ward that is especially
small with only about 30 people or less that normally go to church. To
make it worse their bishop moved out of the ward and didn't have support
from counselors in the meantime. Two weeks ago they called a new
bishop, which is a huge blessing for the ward. It just so happens that
the new bishop is only 24 years old. And the Stake President is 30; he
was called to be bishop at 26 and then as Stake President at 28. That
is just crazy. We had a meeting with him and the Mission President the
other day and he teased the Stake President, calling him a
Deacon. I don't think I would be able to take on that responsibility at
so young an age.
Alright well I think that is about all for now.
I've got to get back to my house to clean up a bit before heading out
to work. I hope that everything is well back home, and I will talk to
you later.
¡CHAO!
Elder Stollenwerk
