Week 9 January 9th, 2012

¡Hola! ¿Cómo les han ido?

Things are going great here in Chile.  This week has actually been a little hard as far as being able to teach a lot of people.  And even worse as far as getting people to church.  The good thing is that we should have a baptism this week if everything goes well!

So that investigator's name is Carolina.  She is a 33 year-old who is pretty awesome.  Unfortunately, she has some difficulty understanding at times, probably because she has had a pretty bad abusive past.  She has also done a lot of things that she regrets, but the awesome thing is that the Gospel and baptism can take all of that away.  One of the struggles that she has had was with smoking, but she has now gone for over 2 weeks without smoking at all.   Now we are just going to be stopping by here just about every day to make sure that she keeps up the good work until her baptism.  It has been really awesome to teach her because I have been able to see the changes in her that come as she tries her best to be obedient and follow the example of the Savior.  Some of the lessons have been so spiritual as we have talked about the atonement and the power that it can have in her life to make her clean and to heal her.  Her mom, Ana, is a recent convert who was just baptized in October.  It is really great to see Carolina finally being able to follow her mom and be baptized as well.  Hopefully in my next email I will be able to send some baptism pictures. :)

Otherwise, the weather here has been pretty hot.  The last two days actually haven't been too bad.  One morning it was actually so cold that I had to wear a sweatshirt in the house. The only thing is that it's just a lot of walking in the sun.  So I just need to make sure that I drink a lot of water so I don't get dehydrated.  I have been able to not really get sun burnt at all so far.  My nose might be slightly red but that's all.

I sent some pictures of my apartment and some of the houses here.  I'll have to get some better pictures of houses sometime.  They vary a lot depending on the part of the city that they are in.  Sometime I want to go around and take pictures of every dog that I see within like a 20 or 30 minute period of time and send them to you.  I think it would be kind of funny.

So weird fact of Chile for the week: EVERYTHING comes in bags. For example,
-Butter
-Jelly
-Ketchup
-Mayonnaise
-Yogurt
-Hand soap
-Shampoo
...just to name a few.  It's pretty awesome.

Also, this coming week, I am going to be going on exchanges, which means that I will be with a different missionary in our sector while my companion goes to there sector with the other companion.  It means that for the first time, I am going to have to completely lead the sector for a full 24 hours.  I'm kind of nervous for that, but it should go fine.

I understand just about everything that most people say.  However, there still are some people that are really hard to understand.

And as far as food goes, we eat a lot.  Like a lot.  Which is pretty awesome.  You don't need to worry about me going hungry, at least while I am here in this sector.  And I really like most of it.  I feel like I'm going to have to like tomatoes by the time I get home. Because I eat them just about every day here.  That is a pretty standard salad.  Along with lettuce with oil and lemon juice.  But yeah, the only thing that I still don't really like are olives.  Not very good.  But otherwise I really like the food here.

Well I gotta get going, but I'll talk to you later!

Chao,
Elder Stollenwerk
